If you are, than you know what a big deal it is to the locals. Local sports writers have called it the biggest sports event in Rowan County every year.

That's a fairly bold statement, considering Rowan County is home to many successful prep sports teams and the tradition-laden winning machine that is Rowan County American Legion Baseball. The Sam Moir Tournament consists of all six Rowan high schools plus Davie County High School.

The three day event draws large crowds each day and both championship games are usually overcrowded with people at Catawba College's Goodman Gymnasium. The event is for many a reunion of sorts. Many past high school players are home from college and they just have to come check out their old high school team. You get to see familiar faces and shake familar hands. Everyone is in the Holiday mood, and the Sam Moir just adds to that cheerfullness.

The tournament also provides great basketball as well.

The Salisbury Lady Hornets (who won the 2A state title last year) just recently won their seventh straight Sam Moir Title with a 69-29 win over West Rowan.

The boys side is usually wide open, but the last three years have been won by the Salisbury Hornets. Quality teams and teams with great tradition such as West Rowan, North Rowan and East Rowan are sure to make the tournament quite entertaining.

If you haven't checked out the Sam Moir Tournament, and you want to see how well and successful a Holiday Basketball Tournament can be ran, than you have to check out next year's version of the classic.

Live Blog: Mountain Heritage vs. Tarboro

With 45 minutes left until kickoff, fans are filing into Kenan Stadium to watch Western 2A Champion Mountain Heritage face off against Eastern 2A Champion Tarboro.

The two teams are on the field for pregame warm-ups.

The temperature is already in the 30's and is expected to dip into the 20's later this evening.

***********

7:30pm

Mountain Heritage elected to receive, Tarboro is lined up to kickoff the ball.

Can West Rowan complete the two-peat?

As Saturday's 3A championship game against Eastern Alamance draws nearer, many Falcon fans and naysayers alike have one thing on their mind, can West repeat as the defending 3A state champs Saturday, at NC State's Carter-Finley Stadium?

This West team, which returned many key players from last year's state title team was expected to get back here coming into the season. Returning all-star running back K.P. Parks, quarterback B.J. Sherrill, defensive end Chris Smith, wide receiver/ punter Jon Crucitti, and a stellar offensive line led by Timmy Pangburn.

West listened early on when people said they weren't as good as last year when they struggled to defeat Davie County and Salisbury. But the Falcons got progressively better as the season went on and captured their sixth straight North Piedmont Conference title.

After four playoff wins against Freedom, RS-Central, Asheville and Tuscola, West has reached the big stage, and it's now time to prove that they belong here, by defeating Eastern Alamance. It surely won't be an easy task, but if West stays focused and they play their way, you know with that "U" swagger, there's no doubt, even in the doubter's mind, that West Rowan Football will bring home it's second straight state championship back to Mt. He has a 57-19 record as a head coach, all at the 4-A level in both North Carolina and Tennessee.

“We’re ready to win championships,” McCurry said in his opening address to the fans but warned that “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”

Based off of his past experiences as a head coach, there is no reason to think that Mooresville won’t be a championship contender under McCurry. Five of his six seasons as a head coach have resulted in conference championships.

After replacing the retiring Bobby Poss at A.C. Reynolds High School in Asheville, McCurry led the Rockets to Northwestern 4-A conference titles in 2003, 2005, and 2006. The team was undefeated in 2006 and finished the season ranked third in the final Associated Press rankings.

While at Reynolds, he also was honored as the Northwestern 4-A coach of the year in 2003 and 2005 and had the #1 ranked defense in 4-A competition in 2005 and 2006.

He became the head coach at Greenville High School in Tennessee in 2007 and compiled a 21-6 record, leading the school to the 4-A semi-finals in 2008.

McCurry comes to Mooresville with a reputation of being among the top defensive minds in the state. He was the defensive coordinator for A.C. Reynolds from 1998-2002 and his defenses were ranked first in the state every season but one.

“We’re going to be strong physically and strong mentally.”

If McCurry’s past is any sign of things to come, expect Mooresville to physically dominate opponents and once again contend for conference titles.

McCurry will meet his players for the first time Tuesday morning. McCurry is a high-energy coach so expect him to hit the ground running and have the players in the weight room training for the 2009 season.

Steve McCurry File

2007-2008Head Football Coach, Greenville HS, Greenville TN

Record: 21-62007 4-A State Quarter-Finalist, 2008 4-A State Semi-Finals

2007 & 2008 5-Rivers Conference Champions & Coach of the Year

2007 & 2008 Greene County Coach of the Year2008 Tri-CitiesSports.com Coach of the Year

2008 Bobby Dodd Sportsmanship Award

2003-2006Head Football Coach, A.C.Reynolds HS, Asheville NC

Record: 36-13

2003,2005,2006 4-A State Playoffs

2003,2005,2006 Northwestern 4-A Champions

2006: Undefeated regular season2006: #3 ranking in final AP poll

2003 & 2005: Northwestern 4-A Conference Coach of the Year

2005 & 2006: #1 Ranked defense in 4-A

1998-2002Assistant Head Coach / Defensive Coordinator, A.C. Now, after head coaching stints at Salisbury (1998), Northwest Cabarrus (1999-2001), and North Mecklenburg (2002-2008), Padgett is excited about taking over for good friend E.Z. Smith.

“I’ve been in this community for 22 years,” he said. “I’ve realized Concord High carries a special relationship with the community. A lot of communities don’t have that type of relationship.”

From 1987 to 1998, Padgett was one of Smith’s assistants, eventually assuming the responsibility of coaching the linebackers and wide receivers/tight ends.

Padgett was 1-3 coaching against Concord, losing as Salisbury’s coach in 1998 (21-6), and with Northwest Cabarrus in 2000 (20-17). The Trojans beat the Spiders under Padgett’s leadership in the regular season in 1999 (7-3) but lost to them in the 3A state playoffs that year, 24-14.

He says he hasn’t seen the Spiders play since he left Northwest Cabarrus after the 2001 season. Not only did North Mecklenburg not play Concord during Padgett’s reign, the 4A Vikings rarely had any common opponents with the 3A Spiders.

Padgett’s week began by addressing his players at North Mecklenburg, where he compiled a 48-39 record in seven seasons. While no one could keep his interest in the Concord job a secret, he says that some Vikings players were “shocked” to hear that he was leaving.

He met with Concord’s players on Thursday and says he will begin spring workouts on Apr. 20, the first day of school after Spring Break. Padgett says he’s already started work on compiling a coaching staff, talking with current Spiders coaches, many who were non-faculty, and those from other schools who may be interested in working at Concord.

Padgett says he understands the challenges of taking over for a former mentor and a man who many would deem a legend in his community. Smith coached the Spiders for 29 seasons, winning 3AA state championships in 2004 and 2006, and compiling a 252-104 career record.

“The first thing you do, from an approach standpoint, is that (you recognize) it’s reality and you can’t change it. You coach as hard as you can and get players to play as hard as they can.
“… When you get sidetracked worrying about other things, they’ll cause detriment to your team. Is it time to move the tournament to a different location?

I know I'll get some of you folks upset, but really, shouldn't it be moved?

The worst part of the entire event is the fact that Greensboro Dudley has to leave Greensboro, oh by the way, the site for the Western Regionals and drive halfway across the state to Greenville to face Kinston.

In my opinion, which I know doesn't mean much or carry very much weight, they should host the Eastern Regionals either in Fayetteville or Raleigh. Both locations are easy for teams to get too from all points east of I-95, and isn't' too much of an inconvenience for teams like Dudley who gets stuck in the east bracket.

I'm sure the Crown Coliseum or Fayetteville State could host the events in Fayetteville, or Reynolds Coliseum, or any number of other venues in the Triangle region.

What do you do when you can't sleep

Crazy things can go through your head with it's 2am and you can't sleep. Sometimes my best ideas come to me at this late hour, and other times I may recall a thing or two that I could have just as well forgot.

Well tonight I realized that we only have five months until the start of football practice and how I"m ready to trade in this cold snowy weather for 90 degree August days with 90% humidity, you know what we call it, "football weather".

I've been talking to coaches for the past few weeks and they're all ready for skill sessions to begin and ofcourse the season. In the old days football was only a seasonal sport but it's become more and more a year-round sport, especially if you want to be compeitive.

Speaking of year round. As we near the end of the high school basketball season, what are your thoughts on year-round basketball. You know that the AAU coaches are anxiously awaiting the high school season's end so they can have access to the players to begin the AAU season. This has started to cause an issue with football. It seems that football coaches are now fighting with their own basketball coaches for kids instead of fighting the opposition.

For some reason it seems that basketball coaches feel they have more of a right to kids and do their best to persuade players from playing other sports, primarily football.

Is this right?

I think not, but I'll receive several emails and phone calls from coaches who disagree. My problem is when coaches feed players with the thoughts that they'll make it in basketball and football is just a way for them to get hurt.

What happend to the days where kids played three sports year-round in high school? I think that makes for a balanced athlete and a more well-rounded kid. Once you start forcing a kid to concentrate on one sport you sort of take his or her innocence away and it becomes a job.

Oh well, enough of this rant, it is 2:07 now and I should try to sleep. However, I'm anxious to read your comments on this. Feel free to shoot me full of holes if you disagree.

Western Regional Basketball Games Rescheduled

Games scheduled for Tuesday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association's Western Regional basketball tournament have been postponed and rescheduled.

Tuesday's games at the Greensboro Special Events Center and Fleming Gymnasium on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro have rescheduled for later in the week. As it stands now, the NCHSAA is worth over 18 million dollars and bringing in more each week.

When Charlie Adams and the association started the endowment fund in 1991, he stressed in a letter to principals that it was for the schools, not for the association. Well now, maybe the association should step up and help the member schools.

The endowment fund has 11.5 million dollars now and it is growing by the minute. With recent storms and rising prices, fuel cost for schools are astronomical leading some school officials to consider cutting sports. Others are struggling with the cost of outfitting players and very well could be allowing players to play with equipment that is less than standard.

I heard the awful news today that J.H. Rose lost a player last night to a concussion and it got me thinking about the equipment I've seen in my days as a coach.

I will not drop any names of schools but there are teams out there with shoulder pads that are falling apart and helmets that haven't been reconditioned in three years. With the technology out there today, we should be providing our kids with the best equipment possible. Helmets exist that can help prevent concussions and such a helmet could have saved Jaquan Waller's life.

I was at the North Carolina Coaches Association clinic this summer and walking around the trade show talking to coaches and looking at vendors' stands. Several helmet vendors were pitching their helmets to coaches and athletic directors but I kept hearing the same response from coaches. "We don't have the funds to spend $300 to $500 plus for a helmet for each kid."

One of the vendors asked the question, "How much is a kids life worth?"

I understand that the cost is high and schools can't pony up with the money, but if it was my son out there on the field, I would want him to have the best possible equipment available.

The NCHSAA has started to spend its money by providing automatic defibrillators to schools. After three deaths this season in football, I think it's time they start helping schools with new helmets.

Will it cost a lot of money? Damn right it will. Is it worth it in the long run? Well what do you think?

I don't think there is a parent in the state who would disagree.

The money the NCHSAA has comes from parents and fans. They collect a slice of tickets, fees, and companies who advertise with the association .

I say its time we start a campaign to help give back to the kids.

Now I'm going to go into a second part of this blog.

I've came across a little tough or jagged in suggesting the NCHSAA needs to help schools out. I agree they should but I want to congratulate the association on what they do for the schools.

Much was made about Charlie Adams and his high salary. I think he's worth every penny of it but it's time they do more for their legacy than raise a lot of money.

Raising money and making the NCHSAA the second richest high school athletic association in the nation is great, but using that money for a great and worthy cause to me is much more important.

Welcome to the Sideline Report

Welcome to The Sideline Report blog here at CarolinaPreps.com.

Well I've got my blog started a little late but its been a great season so far here in North Carolina.

Check back daily, and sometimes twice a day for updates to the blog and new posts.

Also check the parent site CarolinaPreps.com for news and updates.
